I have never read a book by Deborah Smith that is anything but wonderful. Even when you can see the "happily ever after" coming for miles, she has a lovely way with words.

What happened to Deborah Smith?

I've read a number of her books about the North Georgia/Western NC area and enjoyed them. This book had an interesting premise, but is FULL of misspellings, typos, and internal errors. In the beginning, the Judge's father was a tailor who had moved w/ mom to Pennsylvania. Later, he's a deceased retired police officer. She was raised middle-class, or, her family was dirt poor-----take this one off the market and send it back to editing. Right now, it's a stinker.

Oh Dear!

I saw the bad reviews and I admit I couldn't resist buying just to see what the fuss is about.
What is apparently a 24 year old novel that is at least moderately reworked. The result is an extremely corny and ridiculous novel from the 1980's that is weirdly interspersed with modern day references to things like a Prius and a Taser..
Just a couple of thoughts
1. It is a little like reading an essay written by a 6 year old Abe Lincoln where you think "Awwww, and he grew up to be our most famous President!" Read this book and you'll probably think "Wow! And she grew up to be Deborah Smith! There is dialog in this thing that will have you laughing for days.
"She was first prize at the livestock show."
....
"You have strong arms, Jake Coltrane," Vivian whispered weakly. "Gentle arms."
"You're mighty easy to hold, ma'am," he told her, his breath shallow and hard in his throat. He'd have fought a whole army of muggers on her behalf. "You're just like a little sweet baby deer I once caught ... "
Really, if you can read this book and not find yourself cracking-up in laughter at least 4 times a chapter then I weep.
2. Topaz (Kindle Version Specific) No. No. No. No. No. There is nothing worse that asking your readers to PAY for an book riddled with terrible formatting and that doesn't even begin to address the punctuation and grammatical errors. If you can take the time to find places to insert mentions of Kanye West and a GPS system, then you can certainly take the time to produce a properly formatted and spell checked book. Then we can move on to the just plain - huh? places of that's not what you said 14 pages ago. If you want us to buy, we deserve a minimum amount of editing at least.
3. To tell you the truth, when I sat down to write this review I intended to throw in my one or two stars and add in my moral outrage. But you know, I ended up laughing so hard and enjoying myself reading this thing that I just couldn't do it and I gave it three. If it weren't for the atrocious formatting, I might have even went to four. Maybe that's what Deborah Smith intended when she published it through Bell Bridge ... just a "Hey, can you believe I actually got this published and that we all used to read stuff like this?" A blast from the past. If so, it might be better if she made that clear in the description. If not, then I don't even know what to say.
