The Civil War's Ground Zero

The author provides a succinct explanation for the importance of understanding the ongoing fight at Fort Sumter: Quite simply, "No place in American history would be involved in combat longer." (p. 310) In "Sumter After the First Shots" you will learn of the overall strategy as well as the day-to-day operations behind the Union's determination to take the fort and the Confederates' heroic stand there. This is a moving tribute to the bravery and devotion of Fort Sumter's defenders and the dogged tenacity of its attackers. But behind the uniforms, rank and public persona, Derek Smith also explores the humanity, weaknesses, fears and failings of the major players. The reader is treated to moving scenes of a fabulous Georgia band playing "Bonnie Blue Flag" atop the parapet amidst incoming shells, a meteor shower during a nighttime bombardment which "put to shame the efforts of the opposing artillerists," (p. 109) and the heartrending death of a Sumter commander who sought no shelter as a mortar shell targeted his mortal frame. The Union's bloodless final conquest comes as an anti-climax after the prolonged drama of living under constant fire watching the island fortress teeter and crumble, yet prevail--for years!--beneath the onslaught.
I bought this book just before a recent trip to Charleston, and carried it in my backpack on an excursion to the noble fort. At that time I was only halfway through the story, but wish I had completed it beforehand in order to contemplate all of the events that transpired on that embattled rock. But you need not actually travel there; this book gives you the feel of being surrounded by torpedo-infested water, exposed to the elements, endless sand and the enemy, with a seething city in sight trusting their survival to an undermanned fort and larger-than-life commander.
A couple of mistakes cropped up at the beginning of the book. It was the fort's storm flag, not its garrison flag, that flew on April 12 (p. 9), and Richard Anderson was not transferred to Pensacola "to replace Braxton Bragg" (p. 27). Anderson served under Bragg there, no doubt to his regret once a conflict arose with the latter, after which Anderson was transferred to Virginia and fit in well with Lee's army.
Although primarily focused on the immediate environment of Charleston, the author does not neglect the greater political conflicts coursing through the respective combatants' capitals, nor the journalistic essayists who rightly saw Sumter as a symbol, a sine qua non for both sides. This book will give you a grand picture of the War as it emanated outward from this point of conception: a contrived, contested island rising out of a harbor that was anything but safe. Too many studies leave Sumter behind after the first shots, when it was in fact Ground Zero of the Civil War (or perhaps for earthquake-prone Charleston, "epicenter" would be more apt). This book masterfully fills in what is missing from this picture.
