Unique
By Voracious Reader
CITY OF FIRE is a different kind of novel. Much of the story is about Billy Gaston, a boy on the brink of manhood. Billy is basically good, but he gets mixed up with some kidnappers and works hard to make everything come out right.
Billy's two favorite people are Marilyn (Lynn) Severn, the minister's daughter, and Mark Carter. They were childhood friends who fell in love, but, when Mark hears someone say he isn't good enough for her, he turns cold to her and goes off to prove them right. Marilyn accepts all this without an explanation and stoically goes on with her life of playing the organ and helping others. I thought this was a weak link in the plot.
I found the characters very interesting, even Laurie Shafton, the rich, spoiled, lady's man, who had never been told "no," until Marilyn. The plot had some parts that didn't seem quite believable, like when the doctor at a hospital impulsively left his job and took all day to drive Billy home. I still found the story intereresting. I even thought the archaic slang some reviewers mentioned to be chaming and add to the early 20th century feel of the book. Some of the dialect (I guess it was supposed to be New York state) was a little difficult and didn't ring true to me, but, in the end, I was glad I read the novel.

Wordy endearing book with a strong redemptive theme
By Lin Bee
This is my second Hill book and maybe my last. It was wordy, verbose and at times there was SO much tedium. I kept ready and then afterwards asked myself, 'why did I read this at all'? It was winding all over the place as it went here and there and everywhere. I had to stop once and scratch my head and ask "what was that all about"? Then it went on and on. Don't know what happened with Cherry? Don't know why her dad died at the trial's end. Don't know who Dolph was or what he did to Cherry other than maybe get her preggers. Don't know much of anything about anyone. Authoress did not flesh out characters except for maybe Lynn. She was the author's favorite character and she liked Billy too. His phrases were adorable but a bit over done. "AH GEE" was used way too much. One or two times would have done it. I don't recommend this one. After all is said and done and after three days wasted on this book, I feel as if I need an aspirin and a long nap and a GOOD book.
PS.....I did like her strong redemptive message of Faith in Christ! GREAT!

excellent read
By Nancy
the general synopsis of the story is that this is a story about a mill worker and her romance, which does not begin to describe Grace Livingston Hill's way with words. That turns ho hum into a fascinating read you wont want to put down.
