About the Author
Dr. AbdulKarim S. Al Makadma is an internationally respected pediatrician and academic. Born and raised in Al Shati refugee camp in Gaza, he lived under military occupation and survived two major wars before leaving Gaza for medical school in Egypt in 1976. Dr. Al Makadma has practiced medicine in different Middle Eastern countries, rising to prominence in the fields of pediatrics and adolescent medicine. He is the author of several books in the health field and has published articles in prestigious international medical journals. As a clinician, teacher and mentor and through his humanitarian efforts, he has made friends across the globe. Dr. Al Makadma immigrated to Canada in 2000, but his heart will always remain in Palestine.

Fantastic writing.

Every word of this book is written to cause the reader to experience and learn from the the life of the author. Never before have I read such a well written book. I applaud the author for being able to rise above the oppression that the Palestinians face to become such a well renowned doctor and philanthropist. I feel for this man especially after what he experienced in chapter 20 with his son Saeed. The most important part I found in the book is when Karim thinks to himself about how cruel the world and the soldiers were around him when he was a child and hopes that there has to be a way to stop the cycle of cruelty. Beautiful writing that evokes every emotion possible, that is what this book does.

Palestinian author Dr. AbdulKarim S. Al Makadma was born and raised in Al Shati refugee camp in Gaza, living under military occupation and surviving two major wars before leaving Gaza for medical school in Egypt. He is an internationally respected pediatrician and academic, practicing medicine in different Middle Eastern countries, rising to prominence in the fields of pediatrics and adolescent medicine. His impact on the world is multifaceted in his extensive work as a clinician, teacher and mentor and his humanitarian efforts around the globe. He is widely published in the field of medical journals and books and now he offers his autobiography that is as dramatically written as a novel. He now lives in Canada.
One indication of the sensitivity of Dr. Al Makadma's writing is his inclusion of the poetry of Mahmoud Darwish in the telling of his life story - a concept that adds tremendously to this book. But we also discover the humanity of this author in his dedicatory section: `To Jewish people everywhere, including the Israelis, who have been the target of relentless persecution. The evils of racism, intolerance and blind hatred have been unjustly heaped upon them for 2000 years. To Palestinian people who suffer from injustice, discrimination, occupation and oppression. We are being punished for a crime that we never committed. May God grant us relief from our suffering.' And then he opens with one of Darwish's poems:
ALL I HAVE by Mahmoud Darwish
I never carried a rifle on my shoulder,
Nor did I pull a trigger.
All I have is a flute's melody. A brush to paint my dreams,
A bottle of ink.
All I have is unshakeable faith,
And an infinite love for my people in pain.
What follows is not a chronological listing of the events of the author's life, but instead a rich background of the history of Palestine and the shock that 9-11 creates the staging point of this book. Rarely has there been a book that begs understanding of a centuries old conflict as well as this. Dr. Al Makadma extends his humanitarian message in a manner that will draw the reader into a realm of knowledge most have not shared. `We all bleed the same blood and shed the same tears. I wonder, what would Palestine look like if the political powers at be chose a peaceful and civilized alternative to ethnic segregation? What an incredible nation we could build together, Jews and Muslims and Christians, Palestinians all, if we worked as one in cooperation and peace. I hope in some small way that my family's story will be a step away from an endless, violent struggle that will only produce more suffering and towards a future for the Holy Land based on equality, dignity and the rule of law.' Fascinating book. I've lived such a sheltered life .. and stories like these open my eyes to the rest of the world. But it also showed that my feelings and thoughts were NO DIFFERENT than people living in other countries. Saeed explained this well to his son, Karim, while they were looking at the ocean. It brought back memories of my own childhood when I was squinting my eyes at the horizon of the ocean - trying to see the other lands and people that my mother said lived on the other side.
