A MUST READ. Heart breakingly beautiful love story. Can't recommend it enough.

Outstanding. This is another one of those I'm reluctant to write a review because I KNOW I won't be able to express just HOW amazing it was! So if I wasn't clear before - I LOVED this book to pieces. It broke my heart and patched it back together. I found myself holding a hand over my chest the last third of the book and I literally shed tears (which is very uncommon!) at a few breaking points. My oh my oh my, Iain and James, what a ride they had until they found their HEA.
We've met Iain in the Enlightenment series, first in the very short novella "Season's End" (between the 1st and 2nd installment) if you're read it you might remember Iain having a scene in this "high society brothel" in which he yells at a young guy that he shouldn't be there and he shouldn't have gotten an invitation / recommendation and so on.. the scene continues on to Murdo without an explanation to what actually went on there. This is the last time Iain and James meet but it's not where the story starts.
James and Iain known each other for years, since they were kids. It was summer, James was almost 10, when he first met the 13 years old Iain when their family starts spending summers together (from their sisters' and mothers' mutual acquaintance). Though there's quite an age difference they are drawn to one another. James is fascinated by the older kid, he truly idolizes him, and Iain is intrigued by this young kid who knows so much about nature and keeps exploring his surrounding promising he would grow up to be a scientist. For years they spent their summers together and sent letters during the time they weren't able to meet. They were best friends in every sense of the word. The book describes their beautiful connecting, we start with the first time they spend the summer together and move back and forth from the past to the present. The past getting closer and closer to the current time in which James and Iain aren't speaking due to the outburst at the brothel 2 years before the current time.
James had loved Iain for years. He even knew Iain was gay because he "caught" him once.. staying in the shadows he was amazed and aroused by the experience and yet he choose to keep quiet. When he finally acted on his desire Iain accepted the kiss and then rejected him. He tried to explain to James it was a BAD idea for them to act upon their mutual desire with how society perceive it. As the years went by it kept happening again and again, James acting upon his love and attraction to his best friend only to be rejected every time. Every time Iain backs away for a time yet he keeps returning, hoping he could still keep his precious friendship with James. He never admitted to how much James means to him, not to James and not to himself and yet it's always there, the need to be in touch with his best friend even if he cannot have what he wants most.
I was heart broken the whole story. James had SUCH a hard time with how Iain behaved but I couldn't take sides.. I couldn't blame Iain because he did what he thought was the only option that would keep them safe. His upbringing, his inner beliefs and what life taught him was basically - put your best side for everyone to see otherwise hide in the shadows and try not to have any enemies. In the end he was just so miserable, not only because he and James weren't speaking for two years, because his life didn't mean anything to him anymore which is why he makes this "drastic" decision to leave his military service and travel to India to become a sort of a spy. Yet before he leaves he wants to reconcile with James especially because they would probably never see each other again.
This is where we're at in the current time. But before he meets James he has a short meeting with his friend Murdo and his lover David (the MC in Enlightenment). What he sees there doesn't only make him jealous it also sow the seeds to a realization he might have been wrong all these years.
I could write more, but frankly I feel as though I've already wrote too much. I can't recommend this book enough. IMO it's a MUST read. I don't think you HAVE to read "Enlightenment" series before but be advised that the one scene Iain meets with Murdo and David there's a HEAVY spoiler (!) to the second installment and what basically enabled them to be together. Though I wonder what you would get out of it if you haven't meet any of the characters before.. Naturally I recommend you start with the first one because I every book by Joanna is a JOY and shouldn't be missed :)

Most Definitely Reccomended!

Oh my, if this wasn’t a study in contradiction then I don’t know what is? Captain Iain Sinclair is for me one of life’s mysteries, someone who would just drive me nuts, someone who blows hot and cold on what seems at first appearances on a whim. This is certainly the case with his childhood friend and lover, or is he, or isn’t he, or is he, or…….? Iain has been the centre of James’s world for a long time, but he is always left not knowing where Iain stands exactly.
And it was exactly this that I loved about this book so much. In a time where being openly gay would get you into deep trouble in Iain’s eyes the possibility of leading a relationship would not be possible. Compound this with the fact that he has spent most of his life trying to please his father after his older brother drowned, but he was never going to match up to his father’s expectations no matter what he did. Living in the shadow of a very nasty man. So Iain is torn inside, always struggling with himself, trying to deny what he really wants, trying to rationalise things with the thoughts and attitudes of the time. As I said a study in contradiction of ever there was one.
This is where James differs. James would be willing to have a relationship with Iain but all too often Iain comes onto him strong and then blows him away which shows what emotional turmoil is going on inside of Iain. Iain is so afraid of losing James’s friendship that he doesn’t see a possibility to be friends and lovers in one. To Iain you’re either friends or lovers and not both. He loves James dearly but can’t bring himself to think of being in love with him. Men just have sex and that’s it, especially in a time where this would be realistically the only way possible. So I could totally understand James it takes the last straw to break the Camel's back, you can only be hurt so many times before you say enough is enough. This is exactly what he did and they hadn't had contact for over two years. It's time for Iain to make amends.
The story begins when Iain is invited by James's sister to a party. As it was in those days these "parties" would go for days and everyone would be guests at some mansion for a few days or more. Iain has to make one last ditch attempt at begging forgiveness from James and mending their friendship, or is it that or still something else? Geez, you see what I mean? Well, James's reception of Iain is cool to say the very least and Iain has a lot of work and ground to cover to get back James in his life. He still wants to be friends but still can't stop his emotions from wanting more.
This story deals with flashbacks or the plot device is one where you are always taken back to James’s and Iain’s previous situation. You are in the present time, at the party and then you go back and learn about their shared history between James and Iain. Bit by bit the shared pasts of both men are gradually revealed along with all the trials and tribulations that got them to their current predicament when we first meet them. Their relationship hiatus so to speak. As a reader this is a format or plot device that may sit well with some and not others. I found it fine for me because it adds a steady stream of information in trying to understand where both men are coming from in the present setting. Everybody has a past, even in historicals, so as a reader I felt like I was plunged right in the middle of the present situation rather than reading or observing a past historical event. So when we first meet the MCs there are a lot of questions like, why the hell is he behaving like that? Or what ever happened to them to be in the situation they are now? Whatever happened must have been bad, so why are they not speaking to each other? Until in the end all the pieces of the puzzle are put together and we know exactly what has got them to this point. So then the way is clear for them to make amends and see if they have a chance at a future together.
I love my historicals and this one is most definitely recommended. What I really loved about this book is that it wasn’t a book that shoved history down your throat and showed off the author's research. Of course this was impeccably done but this was more a story that deals with realistic feelings, attitudes and emotions of the time between two turbulent characters who had been on a long journey. They now need to make a decision, or Iain most definitely does, whether they can get over their differences and carve out a future together.

Unnatural is a fantastic mix of sweetness and angst! I’m a sucker for a good friends-to-lovers story and Joanna Chambers has delivered a great one in this utterly addictive tale.
Unnatural is a character-driven story, so it’s fortunate that Ms. Chambers has written two excellent heroes. James is a naturalist, a welcome change from the usual Regency-era hero. I absolutely adored him. His open, honest, and loving nature, his unwillingness to consider his attraction to men “unnatural” just because society says it is makes him impossible to resist. James wears his heart on his sleeve for much of the book, and I loved that about him, though given the time period that very openness could put him in a lot of danger. Iain, on the other hand, is very aware of society – and his father’s – opinion on gay men. Iain has been raised to know nothing but fear, duty, and disappointment. James is the bright spot in his life and Iain is unwilling to lose that friendship by giving into his desire for the person he cares about the most. Because of his conflicted feelings, Iain does make a lot of mistakes with James, pushing him away, but always coming back. Normally that much push-pull would annoy me, but Ms. Chambers does such a great job of showing why Iain acts the way he does that I could see why James forgave him – to a point. It’s no spoiler to say that in the present James has had enough and won’t settle for less than he deserves. Whether or not Iain can give him that is something I’ll leave readers to discover, but I will say that I was practically glued to the story, rooting for James and Iain to get the happily ever after they deserved.
The story is structured so that readers go back and forth (with the dates clearly marked) between James and Iain’s past and present, starting with their initial meeting as children. Watching their relationship develop from friendship to something infinitely more complex, seeing the pleasure, fear, hope, mistakes, and pain unfold makes the story all the more powerful. Their present – the part where we hope to see Iain and James get their happily ever after – relies heavily on their history, so while I’m not normally a fan of constant back-and-forth, it really worked for this book (though I do wish we got a bit more time in their present).
Unnatural is part of Ms. Chambers’s Enlightenment series, and since I haven’t read the first three books (David and Murdo’s romance) I can safely say that this story can be read as a standalone. David and Murdo do appear, which should please fans of the series, and after seeing them in Unnatural I definitely want to read their books. But I’m even more interested in seeing the intriguing Kit Redford again, so I hope Ms. Chambers has more Enlightenment stories planned. If you enjoy historical romances with sweet, likeable heroes, heartbreak, and steamy second chances, then you won’t want to miss Iain and James’s book.
