About the Author
Maral Boyadijan is the granddaughter of four Armenian genocide survivors and she weaves the memories and experiences of her grandparents, along with elements of mystery and adventure, into her writing. She lives in Granada Hills, California.

The Armenian Genocide

Few people recall the horrific circumstances which almost extinguished an entire population of Christians in Turkey. We hear now of the Kurds because of our wars but I had no idea they were so horrific in their treatment of their fellow brethren. It is important that we not forget and yet, and yet, we do. We need more books like this because, as Santyana said: "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Short of great.

I think this book fails by emphasizing a young couples love and not emphasizing the political climate until it broadsides you. Perhaps since this is exactly what happened to the real Armenians, she felt it the correct approach. But nothing indicated the total disaster forthcoming. Here you think you are reading a coming of age love story, but it is about genocide. Deal breaker.

The complexities of everyday life as a Christian in Muslim-controlled Turkey during the run-up to WWI reveal the layers of xenophobic provincialism that contributed to the tragedy. Who were the Turks? Who were the Kurds. Who were the Armenians? Relevant questions then and relevant questions today.
